The WebCrawler query forms interface is shown below. The form
interface has changed significantly recently and gained considerable power
and flexibility since WebCrawler searching is now supported by the
OpenText search engine.
Although it does not have all the features of that engine, this new version
is significantly improved. The WebCrawler search page also offers direct
access to GNN Select Reviews the Best of the Net which can be browsed by
topic.
Building a search query in the WebCrawler forms interface requires only four simple steps:
|
|
Type your search terms into the input box at the bottom of the
form. You can use single terms or phrases.
You can also use the Boolean operators (AND), (OR) and (NOT) in your search between terms and phrases to focus it and improve retrieval. NOT logic needs to be used with some caution because it may exclude documents from your result which you might really want to see. To search on a phrase you will need to enclose it in double quotes - for example, "quality control" would find web documents that contained that phrase. Nesting of Boolean logical operations is permitted - for example, ambergris AND (cay OR caye OR key) would locate web documents on Ambergris Caye, a resort island off the coast of Belize that has several spellings. Alternate spellings of the word caye are nested in parentheses and linked with the OR Boolean operator to improve retrieval. The search engine is changing and improving so you may also want to consult WebCrawler's own Search Tips WWW page for more details on how to do the most effective searching. |
